About Yvonne Morgan, Nurse Practitioner

Professional background and clinical experience

I am a Nurse Practitioner and Registered Nurse First Surgical Assistant (RNFSA) with extensive experience in metabolic, bariatric, and colorectal surgical care. My clinical work spans both operating theatre and outpatient settings, supporting patients across pre-operative assessment, surgical care, and long-term follow-up. As a Nurse Practitioner, my role includes independent clinical assessment, prescribing where appropriate, and coordination of long-term care.

As an RNFSA, I work in the operating theatre, assisting surgeons during procedures and providing direct involvement in surgical treatment and perioperative care. This experience provides valuable insight into surgical decision-making, patient safety, and post-operative recovery, which informs my approach to long-term metabolic and weight management care.

I work closely with multidisciplinary surgical and allied health teams, including surgeons, dietitians, psychologists, and primary care providers. This collaborative experience supports continuity of care across both medical and surgical treatment pathways.

I am also involved in postgraduate education as an Honorary Professional Teaching Fellow, contributing to university-based teaching in perioperative and advanced nursing practice.

My inspiration in metabolic care

My interest in metabolic and weight management care developed through early clinical experience in surgical and perioperative practice, where I saw the complex and long-term nature of these conditions. This highlighted the importance of continuity of care, careful clinical assessment, and coordinated multidisciplinary support across both medical and surgical pathways.

Through this work, I became increasingly aware of the stigma and inequities many people experience when seeking care for weight and metabolic conditions. Health outcomes are influenced by biological, hormonal, psychological, and social factors, and individuals do not start from the same place.

My practice is grounded in respectful, non-judgemental, evidence-based care that recognises obesity and metabolic disease as chronic medical conditions. I aim to provide clear, balanced guidance that supports sustainable change without blame, guilt, or unrealistic expectations.

My approach to care

I aim to create a clinical environment where individuals feel heard, respected, and well-informed. Consultations focus on understanding a person’s full health context, identifying realistic goals, and developing a structured, evidence-based plan tailored to their needs.

Care is collaborative and transparent. I communicate clearly with general practitioners and specialists where appropriate, ensuring continuity and long-term support.

Education and professional development

My clinical practice is supported by postgraduate education and ongoing specialist training in metabolic health, weight management, and menopause care. I hold a Master of Health Science and have completed further specialist education, including:

  • Confidence in Menopause education programme (Newsom Education),
  • National Diabetes Knowledge Programme (New Zealand Society for the Study of Diabetes)
  • SCOPE certification in obesity management (currently completing)

I am committed to ongoing professional development to ensure care remains evidence-based and aligned with current clinical guidelines.
